Future Fragments
Þorgerður Ólafsdóttir presents her artistic investigation into the anthropocene and conceptions of cultural and natural inheritance.
The exhibition includes art work and various found objects from nature, large and small, that are interwoven with the history and influence of humans, reaching far beyond the Earth’s celestial sphere. The origins of the project go back to 2014 when Þorgerður assisted the Institute of Archeology in registering objects found during an excavation in Mývatnssveit. She received a small, red plastic fragment with an inscrutable history that sparked the beginning of her collaboration with the National Museum. This exhibition spans a ten-year process of gathering objects that defy definition.
The National Museum’s exhibition is curated in collaboration with designer Garðar Eyjólfsson and research project Relics of Nature, Oslo University.
In her works, Þorgerður often examines objects that are entwined with our understanding of and relationship to nature in times of increased awareness. With Studio Eyjolfsson, Garðar Eyjólfsson has focussed on the improvement and use of local materials in product design and conducted research in the field of design fiction.
